My favorite proposal secret weapon

Updated: Feb 3

You’ve been working for weeks preparing for the holiday. And the food — you’ve been expecting the big meal since the second your Thanksgiving leftovers were gobbled up.

I’ve learned a thing or two over the past 20 years in marketing and proposals.

Some were easy lessons…others, not so much.

Allow me the pleasure of saving you from some mistakes I’ve made over the years.

  • This is probably the most important mistake you need to avoid — when you find a pen you love, don’t wait to stock up. I know it sounds ridiculous, but I kid you not. My favorite pen is no longer available in the USA. Fortunately, I found a replacement. And yes, I buy in bulk whenever I even come close to running out.

  • On a more serious note, don’t forget to record your meetings. Both in-person and online meetings are likely to have a lot of gems you won’t want to forget. And it’s sometimes tricky to take notes efficiently when you’re in the middle of a meeting.

Bonus Tip: grab transcription software like otter.ai to maximize efficiency. Ensure you have permission to record from all parties (Zoom now does this automatically!).

  • Don’t procrastinate on a new proposal. You must be on your A-Game if you want to drive the process and be proactive instead of reactive. There are lots of moving parts, which makes it difficult. Especially if you’re strategizing multiple pursuits simultaneously. But getting an early start will help alleviate some of the pressure and help you avoid oversights.
